Beware: ChatGPT Shared Links Can be Indexed by Google

AI tools like ChatGPT have become essential for brainstorming, problem-solving, and even everyday productivity. But a recent discovery has raised serious privacy concerns about the way ChatGPT’s share feature works.

When you use the share option in ChatGPT, it creates a public web page hosted by OpenAI that contains your conversation. This page isn’t just visible to anyone with the link – it can also be crawled and indexed by search engines like Google, making your shared conversation potentially searchable online.

Why Does This Happen?

The shared link generated by ChatGPT is essentially a live webpage. Unless OpenAI prevents indexing by adding a “noindex” tag, search engines can crawl and list these pages. That means questions, examples, and even personal details you might have shared could become discoverable by anyone.

OpenAI has always clarified that shared links are public. However, many users assumed that “public” meant only accessible to those with the link—not openly listed on the internet.

How to Protect Yourself

If you’ve shared sensitive information using ChatGPT’s share feature, you can still remove old shared links in ChatGPT's settings.
